SECTION 1 - INTRODUCTION AND SCREENING
- 1. Hello, I'm calling long distance for a survey being conducted for the National Marine Fisheries Service of
the U.S. Department of Commerce. Your telephone number has been selected at random. [May I please

- 2. To help me assign your information to the correct location, is the telephone number I've reached you at

Saltwater fishing includes fishing in oceans, sounds, or bays, or in tidal or brackish portions of rivers.
How many people in your household, including children and adults, have been saltwater sportfishing in
the last 12 months anywhere in the US?

sportfishing for finfish in the last 2 months a few questions about their fishing trip(s). What are the first
names of the people in your household who have been saltwater sportfishing for finfish in the past two

accordance with the Privacy Act of 1974, therefore you are not obligated to answer any question if you
find it to be an intrusion of your privacy.
- 12. If more than one fisherman in the household. First, did everyone take all of your fishing trips together
over the last 2 months?
- 13. Again, we're interested in those trips where you went after finfish, and those trips where you caught any
finfish no matter what you were going after. We're not interested in any trips where your main purpose
was to catch fish which you would sell to make money.

FOR RESPONDENTS ON THE PACIFIC COAST, ASK THE FOLLOWING SECTION: (1) it's the first
fisherman in the household. This section is asked after discussing the trips on the first day mentioned. This
section is NOT asked to non-2-month fishing households.
