Best Available Science
Beachi and Banki fishing modei. Surveyi conducted on beaches and bank sitei primarily for catch data.
California Codei of Regulations. The set of administrative rules issued by an agency such as Title 14issued by CFDG for the management of fish and wildlife resources in the state.
California Department of Fish and Game. State natural resource agency that includes marine resource management.
Coastali Household Telephone Surveyi. A NOAAi sponsored RDDi survey of households in counties with access to marine waters.
Commercial Passenger Fishing Vessel. Also known as Partyi and Charter boats. Commercially registered vessels which take recreational fishing passenger trips.
Catch Per Unit of Efforti. The quantity of fish caught per unit of fishing effort, such as number of fish per angleri day or pounds of released catch per boat hour.
California Recreational Fishing Surveyi. An integrated state and federally funded samplingi program for California marine recreational fisheries. Conducted since January 2004.
Coded Wire Tagi. Tiny piece of metal wire with microscopic codei inserted into a fish and read with a metal detector.
Essential Fish Habitat. Those waters and substrate necessary to fish for spawning, breeding, feeding or growth to maturity.

California Fish and Game Codei. The set of laws (statutes) enacted by the California State Legislature and signed by the Governor of California that governs the management of fish and wildlife resources in the state.

Kind Of Day. Weekend (WEi) or weekday (WDi). Legal holidays are considered weekend days.
Man Made fishing modei. Man made structure in the water where anglers may fish.
Marine Mammal Protection Act. The MMPAi prohibits the harvest or harassment of marine mammals, although permits for incidental take of marine mammals while commercial fishingi may be issued subject to regulation. (See "incidental take" for a definition of "take").

Marine Protected Areai
Marine Recreational Fisheries Statistical Surveyi. A national survey developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and conducted by National Marine Fisheries Service to estimate the impact of recreational fishing on marine resources. MRFSSi started in 1979.
The Marine Recreational Information Program is a data collection and analysis initiative implemented by NOAAi Fisheries to help implement the reauthorized Magnusoni-Stevens Act.
Non-Fishing (i.e. non recreational fishing for finfishi) A boat in the CRFSi PR1i surveyi that did not targeti fin-fish.
National Marine Fisheries Service. A division of the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAAi). NMFSi is responsible for conservation and management of offshore fisheries (and inland salmoni). The NMFS Regional Director is a voting member of the Councili.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The parent agency of the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Non Recovered Species. A coded-wire tagi salmoni head which cannot be removed for some reason.

The Ocean Recreational Boat Surveyi (ORBSi) is conducted by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and evolved from a survey of ocean salmoni boats to a survey of all ocean boats.
Washington Ocean Samplingi Program. California Ocean salmoni project. Program to determine recreational and commercial catch, efforti, and salmoni coded wire tagi estimatesi for ocean fisheries.
Optimum Yieldi - The amount of fish that will provide the greatest overall benefit to the Nation, particularly with respect to food production and recreational opportunities, and taking into account the protection of marine ecosystems.
Partyi Charter Phone Surveyi. A weekly VDTSi telephone survey of 10% - 50% of all partyi/charter boats to determine number of trips taken in previous week and number of anglers on each trip. This survey was discontinued in 2011 in favor obtaining trip information directly from PCi vessel log books.
Pacific Fishery Management Councili. A fisheries management body established by the Magnusoni Stevens Act to manage fishery resources in designated regions of the United States. Membership varies in size depending on the number of states involved. There are eight regional Councils, including the Pacific Council.
Private and Rental boats. Private and rental boati modei of fishing
CRFSi Primary (1) Private/Rental boati surveyi. Primary private boati survey for sites that comprise 90% of the catch of important (managed) species.
CRFSi Secondary (2) Private/Rental boati surveyi. Secondary private boati survey for sites that make up 10% of the catch of important (managed) species.
Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission. The PSMFCi is a non regulatory agency that serves Alaska, California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. The PSMFC provides information in the form of data services for various regional fisheries.
Personal Water Craft (e.g. jet ski, float tube).
Randomi Digit Dialing. A method of dialing telephone numbers used in the MRFSSi household telephone surveyi to obtain participation and efforti data, including information on proportion of fishing households in each county.
