[RecFIN News] Revised wave 3, 2002 estimates

There were data collection problems with the MRFSS RDD telephone survey in Wave 3, 2002.  MRFSS staff is continuing to evaluate the data in terms of accuracy and suitability for producing effort estimates.  The telephone data have been replaced with data consisting of the three previous years (1999-2001) of Wave 3 data from the RDD telephone survey. Because the sample size of this pooled data set is comparatively large, the calculated sampling variances for catch and effort estimates will be smaller than in previous years.

Because the wave 3, 2002 estimates are based on pooled effort data from 1999-2001, the effects of actual changes to the distribution and number of angler trips are not represented in revised estimates, but changes to the catch rates are represented in the catch per trip data from the MRFSS field intercept survey.

This table summaries the trend in trips for wave 3 for the past four years by subregion:
